Stump Removal in Richmond

A stump comes out for good one of two ways: ground below the lawn where grass goes back, or dug out with its root ball where a new tree or a footing needs the roots gone. We look at the stump and the spot, and the free estimate says which.

Stump removal in Richmond

Stump removal takes a stump out of a home or business yard for good, and what goes on the spot next decides how it comes out.

Stumps are the whole of our work, residential and commercial alike. A front-yard stump that the lawn will grow back over is one job; a stump where a new tree, a patio or an addition is going in is another, because then the roots have to go too. We tell you which on the estimate, before anything starts.

Which way it comes out

Stump grinding versus full stump removal

Grinding below grade suits a spot going back to lawn or sod and costs less, while digging out the root ball suits a spot where a new tree or a footing goes in.

Costs less, disturbs less

Stump grinding

Grind it out

The grinder shaves the stump and its root flare into chips below the ground. The deeper, finer roots stay in the soil and rot away on their own over 3 to 5 years.

  • Lawn, sod or seed goes over the spot
  • A bed or landscaping goes back in
  • Quicker, cheaper and far easier on the yard

Full stump removal

Dig it out

The stump and its main roots come out of the ground together as the root ball. That leaves a large hole and a wide ring of disturbed ground to put back.

  • A new tree goes in the same spot
  • A footing, patio or addition is being built there
  • Roots are pressing on pipes, utilities or a foundation

Full removal

Digging out the root ball

Full removal digs out the stump and its main roots with heavier equipment and fills the hole, and the free estimate tells you whether your spot calls for it.

  1. Ground opened upSoil comes away from around the stump until the main roots show.
  2. Main roots cutEach one is severed where it leaves the root ball.
  3. Root ball liftedThe stump and its roots come out of the ground in one piece.
  4. Hole backfilledTopsoil goes back in and is packed so the ground holds level.

Removal by grinding

Grinding the stump and its surface roots out

Removal by grinding follows the major surface roots out from the stump and takes the wood below grade, so sod or seed can take over the spot.

  1. Lines locatedBuried utility lines near the stump are marked before the wheel goes in.
  2. Stump taken below gradeThe stump and root flare go to chips 8 to 12 inches below the surface.
  3. Surface roots followedThe grind runs along the big roots 3 to 5 feet from the trunk, not just the visible stump.
  4. Chips raked or hauledThe pile is raked flat into the hollow, or hauled away for a fee.

What it costs

What stump removal costs

Local figures for Richmond put stump removal at a typical $60 to $350 a stump, and digging out the root ball typically costs 2 to 4 times what grinding the same stump does.

Digging costs more because it takes heavier equipment, more labor and a larger cleanup. Within either method, the stump's width at the ground sets most of the price, and its wood, the way in and the count of stumps set the rest.

Those are typical figures, not our quote. We price your stump after seeing it, for the whole job, and nothing is added once the work starts.

Surface roots and lots full of stumps

Surface roots across a lawn and lots with many stumps are jobs of their own, and each one has its own page.

  • Surface root grinding

Roots that run across the lawn and catch the mower are ground down to the stump's depth, so root grinding leaves the yard flat enough to mow and seed.

  • Commercial stump grinding

A lot, a building site or common ground with many stumps on it is commercial stump grinding, quoted by the size and the count of the stumps.

After the stump is out

Restoring the spot after removal

Once the stump is out, the spot is backfilled with topsoil, graded and seeded or sodded, so it does not settle into a hole.

Grinding leaves a hollow of chips and soil, and digging leaves a deeper hole. Left as they are, both sink as the wood underneath breaks down, so the finish work goes on the estimate as its own line: haul the chips or rake them in, fill, grade, then seed or sod. Rubber-tracked machines keep the turf around the spot from rutting on the way in and out.
