Stumps, roots and the cleanup

Stump Grinding in Mechanicsville

About half the houses here were built after 1990, and the trees planted with those yards have had years to put on width. When one comes down it leaves a broad stump with roots running out under the grass, and we grind it below the lawn.

Call (804) 429-8770, Monday to Saturday, 7 am to 6 pm. The estimate is free and prices the whole job.

From call to cleanup

Stump grinding from the estimate to the cleanup

Every stump job we take runs in the same order, and the first step costs you nothing.

The order is what keeps the price fixed and the yard clean: the stump is priced only after we have seen it, the buried lines are marked before the wheel goes in, and the chips go back where the stump stood.

  1. Tell us about the stump

Call and say where the stump stands, about how wide it is at the ground and how many there are. We answer, or call back the same working day.

  2. We see it, then price it

The free estimate covers the whole job: the stump's width at ground level, its wood, how the machine reaches it, the surface roots and the cleanup you want. Nothing is added after.

  3. The buried lines get marked

Grinding below grade is digging, so the free 811 utility locate marks gas, electric and water lines in the yard first, and the wheel keeps clear of the paint.

  4. We arrive on the day we set

We show up when we say we will. A stump behind a fence is reached the way the trade reaches it, with a compact grinder sized for a standard 36-inch gate.

  5. The stump goes below the grass

The cutting wheel sweeps the stump face to chips, pass by pass, until the stump and its root flare sit 6 to 12 inches below the surface, deep enough for grass or sod to take the spot.

  6. Raked level, cleaned up

The chip-and-soil mix is raked back into the hole and leveled, and loose chips are cleared off the lawn. Hauling the pile away is its own line on the estimate.

The yards we grind

Lots, landmarks and local ground

Most of the stumps we grind here stand in house yards, and most of those houses are lived in by the people who own them.

An owner usually has a plan for the spot that comes next: grass, a bed, a new tree. A yard may hold a tree that stood before the street was laid out or one planted the year the house was new, and by the time either comes down its stump is wide and its roots reach out into the lawn.

We grind in Meadow Gate, Hanover Grove, Bell Creek North, Brooks Hollow, Foxlair and the streets between them.

A yard a few streets from Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center gets the same estimate and the same cleanup as one at the far side of town.

Stump removal or a grind below grade

The choice comes down to what goes on the spot next.

Most homes here are lived in by their owners, and an owner usually has a plan for the spot. A grind below grade suits a lawn or a bed; full stump removal digs out the whole root ball, which can run 4 to 10 feet across, and typically costs 2 to 4 times as much as grinding.

Most yards

Grind below grade

  • Grass, seed or sod
  • A flower bed or mulch
  • Deep grinding for a new tree

Dig out the root ball

  • A footing over the spot
  • Every root has to go
  • Heavier digging equipment

Commercial stump grinding on cleared lots

A lot full of stumps gets ground in one visit, whether it belongs to a business or to a home.

With 15,846 homes in town and the shops and lots around them, stumps come in groups as often as alone. One trip and one setup cover them all, so each stump costs less than it would on a day of its own, and the quote counts every stump by size before we start.

  • A row of stumps after a storm
  • A lot cleared for building
  • Old trees on common ground

The trip from Richmond that brings our grinder here reaches the towns around it too, with the same free estimate.

Close by, we also grind in Glen Allen, Sandston, Highland Springs, Hanover and Ashland.

Asked on the call

A Question We Hear Often

Will a tree grow back if I grind its stump?

Not from a stump ground below grade: the grind takes out the root crown, the growth point a tree sprouts from, along with the stump. A few kinds of tree may push a sucker or two from leftover roots for a season, and mowing them down ends it.

A shallow grind can leave the crown in place, so ask for the depth on the estimate, and read what happens after a stump is ground.
