Grey, soft and sprouting
Stump grinding for old and rotted stumps
A stump that has sat for years, gone grey, soft at the edges and sprouting at the base, grinds out the same way a fresh one does: the cutting wheel takes it to chips below grade and the spot goes back to lawn.
Age changes the work more than the result. Rotted outer wood shaves away fast, while the heartwood at the root collar often stays hard, and that collar is the growth point that has to go before the shoots stop. Old stumps also tend to sit tight against a brick walk, a step or a fence put in around the tree, so we look at what stands beside one before we quote it.
We look before we priceWidth at the ground, how far the rot has gone and what stands within reach of the wheel all go into one quote for the whole job.
The buried lines get markedAn 811 utility locate flags gas, water and electric lines in the yard first, since a grind below grade is digging.
The collar goes below gradeThe wheel sweeps the soft wood and the hard collar to chips, commonly 6 to 12 inches down, deep enough that nothing sprouts back.
Chips raked back, or hauledThe chip-and-soil mix fills the hole and is raked level, or the chips go and topsoil goes in when you want to seed right away.
Brick, iron and old shade
Historic districts and older homes
Blandford Church stands at the highest point in the city, atop Well's Hill, the oldest building here whose history is well documented, and the streets below it hold the old trees, brick walks and iron fences that make a stump job more about care than horsepower.
Poplar Lawn, Folly Castle, Centre Hill, Courthouse Historic District, Pocahontas Island
Each but the last is a national historic district, and the last is a peninsula on the Appomattox River. Across the city there are 18,026 housing units, and on the protected blocks a grinder works close to things nobody can replace, so we keep the wheel off old brick and stone, shield what the chips could hit and leave the ground level.
More than the grind
When the stump is only part of the job
Some yards need the stump out completely, the roots flattened or a whole row cleared, and each of those starts with the same free estimate.
Stump removal with the hole filled
Half the homes in the city were built by 1969, and many of the trees planted with them are coming down now.
Where a patio, an addition or a new tree is going in, stump removal takes the stump out completely, root ball and all where it has to go, and fills the hole so seed or sod can take.
Surface roots that lift the grass and catch the mower are ground down with the same machine, so the yard mows flat. The deep roots stay in the soil and rot away on their own.
A yard full of stumps
Several stumps ground in one visit cost less each than the same stumps on separate days, because the drive and the setup are paid for once.
