The going rate
The typical price of stump grinding
Stump grinding in Richmond typically runs $110 to $420 a stump, and most homeowners with an ordinary yard stump pay $110 to $130.
The spread is wide because city surveys reach from $78 to $137 at the low end to $346.65 to $693.30 at the top, and the stump itself decides where it falls. Most grinders also set a minimum visit fee whatever the size, since hauling the machine out and setting it up costs the same for a small stump as for a large one.
Those are the city's typical figures, not our quote. Richmond stump grinders quote each stump grinding service after seeing it, and ours is free.

Where a stump lands
Width, wood, age and access
Width at ground level sets most of the price, and hard wood, a fresh cut, tight access or a house or fence close by each add to it.
A wider stump takes more passes of the wheel, more machine time and more chips to manage, and the work grows faster than the width does.
- Stump width at ground levelRead across the widest part at the soil line, surface roots included. It is the biggest single part of the price.
- Hardwood or softwoodOak, maple and hickory resist the carbide teeth and grind far slower than pine, poplar or sweetgum of the same width.
- Fresh or rottedAn old, partly rotted stump grinds easier and costs less than a green one cut last month and still full of moisture.
- Gate and slope accessAn open yard takes a full-size grinder. A narrow gate or a slope calls for a compact grinder, which is slower, and sometimes protective mats.
- Nearness to buildings and linesA stump against a foundation or a fence, or over buried lines, takes more maneuvering and more care for what stands around it.
Two ways to set a price
Priced by the inch or by the job
Some grinders price a stump by the inch of its width and others price the whole job after seeing it, because width alone does not set the full scope.
By the inch
A set rate times the stump's width at ground level, which around the city typically runs $3.50 to $4 an inch. It is quick to work out over the phone.
It leaves out the wood, the age, the gate and the roots, so price lists built this way often add a charge per running foot of surface root.
By the job, after a look
The stump is measured, and the wood, the ground, the route in and whatever stands beside it are seen before a price is set.
Our estimate is free and covers all of it, and the number holds once the grinder starts.
The do-it-yourself math
Renting a grinder or hiring the job
A rented grinder costs a day's fee plus fuel and grinds shallower than a professional machine, and the safety risk of running it falls on you.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration counts machinery among the serious hazards of tree care work, and a grinder's wheel throws chips and stones hard. A stump tight against a foundation or a fence is the worst place to learn the machine.
Renting
- A day's rental fee, plus fuel
- Towing it home and back
- Rarely deeper than 4 to 6 inches
- Regrowth left in most species
Hiring the job
- A free estimate for the whole job
- Ground below grade, past the root collar
- Chips raked back, yard cleaned up
- No machine for you to run
On top of the grind
Chip hauling, topsoil and roots
Hauling the chips away, filling the hole with topsoil and grinding the surface roots are usually priced on top of the grind.
- Chip haulingThe grind leaves a mound of chips and soil. Raked back into the hole it settles as mulch; hauled away, it is a line of its own.
- Topsoil fillFresh topsoil in place of the chips levels the spot so seed or sod goes down right away.
- Surface root grindingRoots running 3 to 5 feet out across the lawn are ground down with the same machine, and the time shows on the estimate.
Every extra you choose is written on the estimate before we start. What to do with the chips and the hole is the last choice of the job.

Common question
Grinding Time, Answered
How long does it take to grind a 24 inch stump?
No single clock time fits a stump that wide, because dense oak or hickory resists the grinding teeth and takes far longer than pine of the same width.
A fresh, green stump grinds slower than an old, partly rotted one, and a narrow gate or a slope that calls for a smaller, slower grinder adds time too.
The same things that set the time set the price, as the stump grinding cost factors on this page lay out.
