Grinding depth
What goes in the spot next, grass, a new tree or a footing, decides how far down the grinder has to go. Here is the depth each one needs, measured from the lawn.

Below grade
Standard depth
A standard grind takes the stump 6 to 12 inches below grade, deep enough for topsoil and grass to cover the spot and to stop most regrowth.
"Below grade" means below the level of the lawn around the stump, so the depth is measured from the grass, not from the top of the cut. The wheel shaves the stump and its root flare down past the "root collar", the growth point that sends up new shoots, and with that gone most trees do not come back.
Knocking the top off and leaving a hump under the turf is not the same job. A rented consumer grinder rarely gets past 4 to 6 inches, which is why sprouts and a sunken patch so often follow a do-it-yourself grind.
When the spot gets reused
Replanting a tree or setting a footing where the stump stood calls for a deeper grind than sod does, and that takes a grinder built to reach it.
"Deep grinding" goes 16 inches or more below grade, down to soil a new tree's roots, or a patio, drive or footing's base, will sit in. Grinders with deep-grinding capacity reach up to 24 inches, enough soil depth to plant a new tree in the same spot.

What it adds to the estimate
A deeper grind takes more passes of the wheel, and the extra passes add to the price.
Stump width sets most of the cost of stump grinding in Richmond, and depth comes after it. Standard depth is part of every estimate; when a tree, a patio or a footing is going in the spot, we price the deeper grind on the same quote before the grinder starts, and nothing is added after.
Past the stump
Roots below and beyond the grind stay in the soil and rot away over a few years.
The wheel takes the stump and its root flare. The long "lateral roots" that run sideways under the yard are left to decay on their own, since digging them out would tear up the lawn. On trees such as maple, a shoot may come up now and then from a root outside the grind, and it is cut back like any sprout.
Roots that hump up through the grass are a separate job: they are ground down level with the yard so it mows flat around Richmond's big oaks and maples.
surface root removalBefore the grinder starts
Any grind below the surface is digging, so Virginia 811 is asked to mark the buried lines first.
Virginia 811 marks buried utility lines for free when asked a few working days ahead. The deeper the grind, the more those marks matter: where gas, water or electric runs close to the stump, the wheel stays shallow there or keeps away.
With 811 called ahead of the grind, the paint and flags are on the lawn when the machine arrives.
811 before stump grindingCommon question
Height is rarely what holds a grind up: a tall stump gets a fresh chainsaw cut close to the ground first, so the wheel starts low and the job goes faster. What sets the work is the width at the ground and the wood, so tell us both on the call and the estimate covers it, along with how deep the grind goes below the lawn.

We had trees removed by Elias who than used Garcia to remove stumps. Great work. Curtious, polite and got it done in no time. Thank you.
Garcia stump grinding is awesome! He took care of a lot of stumps we had in an efficient way. Our yard looks so much better! Highly recommend.
The Garcia Stump Grinding team gets it done every time rain or shine. We still have more work to do and we will call them again being that we only work with these guys. Highly recommend. Easy to get along with and they work extremely quick and clean. Really, these guys will steam roll a tree/ stump job.
Tell us what goes in the spot next, and the free estimate names the depth it needs. We answer Monday to Saturday, 7 am to 6 pm, and return any other call the next working morning.
We quote the whole job before we start, with no surprise charges after, and we clean up when the work is done.
