commercial stump grinding on a Richmond building lot

What the work is

Commercial stump grinding in Richmond

Commercial stump grinding is how we clear stumps from commercial lots, rental properties and building sites, with the estimate taken on the property itself, stump by stump.

We walk the ground with you, measure each stump across at the soil line and note its wood, what stands near it and what goes over it next. The quote covers the whole list before the grinder starts, and the number does not change once it does.

The right machine

Production grinders for large and many stumps

A wheel grinder handles a flat lot and most of the stumps on it; the big hardwood stumps a cleared site leaves behind take a larger production machine.

Wheel grinder

Flat lots, most stumps

The standard stump grinder. It works across open, level ground and takes most of the stumps a lot or a yard holds, one after the next.

Cleared sites

Drum and production grinders

Wide, dense hardwood

Higher cutting speed for the wide oak and hickory stumps that resist a smaller wheel's teeth. Remote-controlled models grind as deep as 24 inches while the operator stands clear of the chips.

Compact grinder

Tight corners and gates

Narrow enough for a gate of about 36 inches, it reaches the stump against a fence, a wall or a building where full-size equipment cannot go.

Which machine a lot needs is settled on the estimate, from the width and wood of its stumps and how the ground lies.

Under slabs and paving

Grinding ahead of construction and paving

A stump under a planned footing, slab or pavement gets ground deeper than one under lawn, and we set that depth for each stump before the work starts.

Where grass goes back, the grind stops a few inches below grade, enough for sod or seed. Where a drive, a slab or a footing goes over it, the grind goes on toward a construction-ready sub-grade. If the plan needs the whole root ball out, that is digging rather than grinding, and the estimate says so.

What it costs

How a lot of stumps is priced

Many stumps in one visit cost less each than the same stumps on separate days, because the drive and the setup are paid for once.

Across the trade, grinding several stumps in a single visit brings the per-stump price down by roughly 30 to 50 percent. The rest of the price is each stump's width at the ground, its wood, the depth it needs and how the machine reaches it. We quote by stump size and count for the whole lot, before we start, and nothing is added after.

From the call to a clear lot

How a lot full of stumps gets cleared

The job runs in the same order every time, and the order is what keeps the price fixed and the site safe.

  1. Describe the lot

Call and tell us roughly how many stumps, how wide, and what is planned for the ground. We answer or call back the same working day.

  2. Count and measure

We walk the property, measure each stump at ground level, set the depth each one needs and quote the whole job before any work.

  3. Mark the buried lines

Grinding below grade is digging, so the 811 locate marks gas, water and electric lines before the machine arrives.

  4. Grind and clean up

The stumps come out in a single visit, then the chips are raked into the holes or hauled off, as the quote says.

On a commercial site

Right-of-way stumps and site safety

A stump in a public right-of-way may need the city's say before anyone grinds it, and the trade does this work to ANSI Z133 and OSHA safety practice, with the area around the wheel kept clear of flying chips.

When the tree was city-owned or stood in the public strip, the owner may need to contact 311 first. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration counts tree care among the trades with serious hazards, and stump grinding crews train in its standards as the baseline for every job.

  • Flying chipsThe wheel throws chips and debris at speed, so the area is kept clear and the operator wears protective gear.
  • Right-of-way stumpsA stump on city ground or in the public strip may need a 311 request before it is touched.
  • A tripping hazard until it's goneA stump left on a commercial lot catches feet, and the property owner answers for the injury.

Homes too

Residential and commercial stump grinding

Homes get the same grind, the same cleanup and the same whole-job quote as a commercial lot; a house with one stump is simply a shorter day.

  • Single stump grindingOne stump in a front or back yard, ground below the lawn and raked level.
  • Multi-stump clearingLots, rental properties, common ground and building sites, in one visit.
  • Stump removalGround below grade, or dug out with the roots where the ground needs them gone.
  • Surface root grindingRoots running across the grass ground down so it mows flat.

One stump at the house

A single stump in the yard gets the same grinders, the same depth and the same cleanup as a lot.
